Pumpcharger System: Efficiency and CO2 Capture

Our Mission: Decarbonizing Large Engines

Pumpcharger is dedicated to developing and implementing advanced technology to reduce CO₂ emissions and enhance the efficiency of large internal combustion engines. We are committed to providing a near-term decarbonization pathway for engines in the 1–90 MW class, aligning with current and anticipated emissions regulations.

Technical Basis
The technical framework of the Pumpcharger system is based on controlled oxyfuel engine operation. Oxygen concentration is managed to optimize combustion conditions, while CO₂ and H₂O are utilized to moderate peak flame temperatures. The resulting combustion environment supports enhanced thermal efficiency, increased power density per cylinder volume, reduced heat losses, and elimination of nitrogen-derived NOx.

Practicality
It is emphasized that the system has been structured to employ commercial components and recognized engineering principles. No new materials, chemical absorbers, or experimental reaction processes are required. This design intent has been adopted to reduce technical risk and support practical deployability.

CO₂ Capture
It is set forth that exhaust CO₂ capture is conducted through controlled temperature and pressure management. Condensation-based separation allows capture rates approaching ~99% under appropriate operating conditions. Cost assessments indicate materially lower capture cost compared to amine-based processes.

Performance Outlook
The following developments are anticipated:

  • Short-term: Retrofit-configured systems enabling compliance enhancement and economic optimization

  • Medium-term: Further optimization of synthetic air configurations to increase efficiency margins

  • Long-term: High-performance compact engine architectures enabled by advanced oxyfuel control

Technology Qualification Path
Advancement toward TRL 6 demonstration in relevant environments has been planned. Subsequent operational demonstrations are intended to establish TRL 7 qualification and commercial readiness.
